Cradock Four families make urgent plea to SANDF on legal funding for former member

The families of the slain anti-apartheid activists known as the Cradock Four, have made an urgent appeal to the SA National Defence Force to pay the legal costs of a former officer implicated in their murders.
In a statement on Friday, they said that this will allow the third judicial inquest into the 1985 murders to continue uninterrupted in the Gqeberha High Court.
The first session of the inquest came to a close on Wednesday and will continue in October.

Lukhanyo was only three years old when his father was killed, leaving him too young to directly learn from Fort.

Fort Calata, Matthew Goniwe, Sparrow Mkhonto and Sicelo Mhlauli were abducted and brutally murdered by apartheid police nearly 40 years ago. The first phase of the inquest has concluded in Port Elizabeth.

First session of Cradock Four inquest concludes

The families of the victims of the anti- apartheid activists known as the Cradock Four concluded their impact statements on the last day of the inquest into the deaths in the Gqeberha High Court.
Fort Calata, Mathew Goniwe, Sparrow Mkhonto and Sicelo Mhlauli, were brutally killed by apartheid-era police in 1985, and their families are still seeking answers nearly forty years later.
Nyaniso Goniwe and Reverend Charl Coetzee were the last to take to the stand on Wednesday, which was also the final day of the ‘first session’ of the inquest which started on 2 June.

Johan Marais faces sentencing for the murder of activist Caiphus Nyoka in apartheid-era case
CAPE ARGUS:
10 JUNE 2025Former apartheid police officer Johan Marais, who was earlier found guilty of the 1987 murder of student activist Caiphus Nyoka, will be back in the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, on July 7, when arguments will be further presented regarding his possible sentence.
The defence called a psychologist last week who assessed the 66-year-old Marais.
She told the court that he has remorse for what he had done 38 years ago, and he wishes that he could undo what had happened.
