Frank Chikane: I Wanted the Truth About My 1989 Poisoning, Not Revenge
ohannesburg – Anti-apartheid activist Reverend Frank Chikane says he was preoccupied with getting the truth about the details of his 1989 poisoning rather than seeking punishment for his would-be murderers.
Chikane was testifying at the TRC Cases Inquiry in Newtown when he explained his approach to the attempted assassination. He told the inquiry that his priority had always been to understand how the poisoning was carried out, who was involved and who gave the orders.

TRC Inquiry | Chikane defends truth-seeking stance as inquiry probes apartheid-era prosecutions
Y-FM NEWS: 13 August 2026
Reverend Frank Chikane says his decision not to oppose apartheid-era pardon applications was shaped by the trauma of surviving repeated attempts on his life, pushing back against criticism that his stance undermined his commitment to uncovering the truth.
Chikane was cross-examined at the TRC Cases Inquiry in Johannesburg on Thursday, where his testimony highlighted the difficult balance between seeking information from apartheid-era perpetrators and pursuing their prosecution.

Anti-Apartheid activist Reverend Frank Chikane says he was preoccupied with getting the truth about the details of his 1989 poisoning rather than seeking punishment for his would-be murderers.
Testifying on day 71 of the TRC Cases Inquiry in Newtown, Johannesburg, Chikane says he had a different approach to NPA Deputy Director Anton Ackermann and his colleagues, who he believed were rushing the prosecution of the perpetrators.

Chikane defends decision not to oppose pardon for chemical poisoning attackers
Anti-apartheid activist Reverend Frank Chikane has defended his decision not to oppose the pardoning of people convicted of the 1989 attempt on his life through chemical poisoning.
Chikane gave evidence before the commission, chaired by Justice Sisi Khampepe, in Johannesburg on Thursday, with his evidence led by Advocate Vas Soni.
His testimony follows criticism from former Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) commissioner Yasmin Sooka, who has suggested that Chikane’s decision not to oppose the pardon undermines efforts to establish the truth about the attack.
Green Shoots: Are we letting our past kill the future?
A recent article in the Daily Maverick about Yasmin Sooka’s testimony at the Khampepe Commission caught my attention this week. Yasmin is a respected human rights lawyer and campaigner, and in her illustrious career was also a Commissioner at our Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).
The article coincided with a panel discussion I joined at St Mary’s University College in Belfast that reflected on thirty years since the establishmentof the TRC, and insights and lessons that might be of relevance to the transition process inthe north of Ireland.
