Nhleko, Sithole appearances before TRC cases inquiry postponed indefinitely

Former police minister Nathi Nhleko and former national police commissioner Khehla Sithole’s scheduled appearances before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Cases Inquiry have been postponed indefinitely.
The two were due to testify before the inquiry on Thursday. Nhleko was expected to answer questions on whether cases referred by the TRC for criminal investigation and prosecution were delayed during his tenure as police minister between 2014 and 2017, while Sithole was expected to account for his time as national police commissioner from 2017 to 2022.

A witness in the murder case of Joe Gqabi complained that an investigator had told him that the SSA had denied him access to files.
Communication delays between investigators and the State Security Agency (SSA) are to blame for some of the frustrations experienced by complainants seeking justice for decades-old crimes.
A lead investigator at the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations was before the Khampepe Commission of Inquiry on Thursday, where he elaborated on his dealings with witnesses and the SSA.

JOHANNESBURG – Former minister of police, Fikile Mbalula, said perpetrators of heinous apartheid-era crimes must be prosecuted, dead or alive.
Mbalula was testifying at the Khampepe Commission, in Johannesburg. The Commission looks into Truth and Reconciliation Commission cases.

TRC COURT UPDATES:
Judgment in the Re-opened Inquest into the Death of Mr Griffiths Mxenge (KZN):
Judgement is expected in the PMB High Court on 20 July 2026 in respect of the arguments advanced in the re-opening of the inquest into the death of human rights lawyer and activist, Mr Griffiths Mxenge who was abducted, stabbed, beaten and then killed by members of the security branch in 1981. A formal inquest into the death of Mxenge was held as from 15 July 1982 to 23 September 1983 at the Umlazi Magistrate’s Court.
Re-opened inquest of Mr Matthews Mojo Mbabane Continues:
The re-opened inquest into the death of Mr Mathews Mabelane, activist and member of the Soweto Students Representative Council continues on 21 July 2026 at the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg. The last surviving member of the interrogating officers is expected to testify.
It was alleged that Mabelane jumped to his death in 1977 from John Vorster Square (now Johannesburg Central) SAP building where he was detained for contravening section 6 of the Terrorism act. Several witnesses have already testified including senior forensic pathologists, trajectory experts, family members and similar fact detainees.
Trial commences in the death of Mr Batandwa Ndondo
The trial into the death of the 1985 murder of activist and UNITRA student, Mr Batandwa Ndondo in Cala is expected to get underway before a special court at Lady Frere between 21 and 31 July 2026. This matter was enrolled in 2025 after a decision was taken to charge Mr Gcinisiko Lamont Dandala, for the murder of Ndondo who was shot dead during an altercation with members of the Security branch.
State v Engelbrecht and Others (Nyoka)
Sentencing for murder accused Engelbrecht and Stander is expected to get underway at the South Gauteng High Court before Judge Mohammed on 20 – 24 July 2026. The two were convicted on 2 December 2025 of the 1987 murder of student activist Mr Caiphus Nyoka who was gunned down in Daveyton on the East Rand. The leave to appeal by the State against the acquittal of the commander is also expected to be heard. A third accused, Major Leon van den Berg was acquitted.
