How the Justice Department is investing R48 million in reparations for TRC victims

Advocate Kalayvani Pillay, the current Acting Director General of the Justice Department and Constitutional Development, has revealed that the department has, over the years, spent more than R48 million towards individual reparations of TRC victims through the President’s fund.
Pillay, who has served in various roles within the department, gave a detailed account of the work of the department as part of her evidence before the TRC Cases Inquiry chaired by Justice Sisi Khampepe on Thursday.

Two former directors-general of the department of justice and constitutional development told the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Cases Inquiry on Tuesday that they had no role in decisions relating to TRC prosecutions, saying responsibility rested exclusively with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
Former Director-General and advisor at the Department of Justice, Doctor Mashabane, has categorically denied accusations that he was involved in political interference in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) cases.
Mashabane delivered his testimony before the TRC cases inquiry chaired by retired Justice Sisi Khampepe on Monday.

As the director-general, I have no direct interaction or involvement in such processes.”
