Former Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko says the matter of TRC cases never arose during his tenure, adding that they would have been the responsibility of the police commissioner at that time, even if they had.
Nhleko, who served as police minister between May 2014 and March 2017, was testifying on day 84 of the TRC Cases Inquiry public hearings taking place in Newtown, Johannesburg.
Nhleko was in an exchange with commissioner Andrea Gabriel.

Sydney Mufamadi denies meeting apartheid generals to avoid accountability
Johannesburg – Former Minister of Safety and Security Sydney Mufamadi has denied ever participating in any meetings with former apartheid generals aimed at ensuring they avoid accountability for human rights violations.
He gave evidence on Monday at the TRC Cases Inquiry — the Khampepe commission — on day 82 of public hearings in Newtown. Mufamadi was Nelson Mandela’s first police minister from May 1994 to June 1999.

Nearly 60 years after South African Airways Flight 406 crashed off the coast of East London, the families of the 25 people killed are challenging the official account of the disaster, alleging that crucial evidence was deliberately concealed.
The allegations emerged at the TRC Cases Inquiry on Friday, where Robyn Lichter, the daughter of one of the victims, told the inquiry that bodies were recovered, the wreckage was located and search personnel were allegedly placed under secrecy restrictions.

As a child under South Africa’s apartheid system, Winky Mngqibisa had always felt shy and inferior, painfully reminded of her status by racial laws that kept the Black majority excluded from power.
It was Steve Biko, a young anti-apartheid leader, who inspired her to be proud of herself. When he was tortured and killed in police custody in 1977, she mourned at his funeral − then joined his cause.
“You must liberate your mind before you can liberate others,” she says, recalling his words.

Breaking: Gqeberha High Court halts reopened Steve Biko inquest
Gqeberha – The High Court in Gqeberha has halted the reopened inquest into Steve Biko’s death after an urgent application by his family.
The order pauses the inquiry that retired judge Isaac Madondo has been hearing, pending a review of his 26 August decision to refuse a postponement. Widow Nontsikelelo Biko and son Nkosinathi Biko asked the court not to let witnesses finish and leave before their lawyers can read the 1977 record in English.
The application was argued on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, after a delay on Tuesday so that every party in the inquest could be served.

The reopened inquest into the death of Black Consciousness leader Steve Biko has been temporarily halted after his widow and son won an urgent order in the Gqeberha High Court on Wednesday.
The order came three days before September 12, 49 years to the day since Biko died in detention.
It suspends the inquest pending their bid to overturn retired Judge Mjabuliseni Isaac Madondo’s refusal to give them more time.

Biko’s family brought an urgent application in the Gqeberha High Court to suspend the inquest, saying they needed more time to properly prepare their case.
The family says hundreds of documents still need to be scrutinised, with some requiring translation from Afrikaans.
