Lawyers ready with closing arguments at reopened inquest into death of Imam Haron

Cape Town – Lawyers for the family of anti-apartheid Struggle activist Imam Abdullah Haron, who died in police custody in September 1969, are set to present closing arguments in the Western Cape High Court on Monday, where the reopened inquest will be heard.

An update from the Foundation for Human Rights, which helped push for the reopening of the inquest, said the National Prosecuting Authority and the lawyers representing the Haron family had exchanged heads of argument in preparation for Monday’s hearing.

CAPE TOWN – Late Muslim scholar, Imam Abdullah Haron’s family said that the truth about their father’s death would bring some form of closure for them.

At the age of 45-years-old, the anti-apartheid activist died in police custody in 1969, after being arrested for terrorism.

Closing arguments in the reopened inquest probing the imam’s cause of death will be heard in the Western Cape High Court on Monday.

‘Interrogated almost daily’: Haron inquiry continues

Cape Town – Closing arguments in the inquiry into the death of Imam Abdullah Haron are set to be heard in the Western Cape High Court on Monday.

Haron, an anti-apartheid activist, died while he was in police custody in September 1969, and an inquest was re-opened 53 years later.

Evidence was submitted by a number of witnesses between November 7 and 16 last year, including the investigating officer, Daniel Petersen, who was assigned to the matter during 2020.

Cape Town – Closing arguments in the reopened inquest into the death of anti-apartheid activist Imam Abdullah Haron resumed in the Western Cape High Court on Monday.

Haron was detained under the then Terrorism Act on May 28, 1969. For 123 days he was reportedly held in solitary confinement, interrogated almost daily and assaulted an unknown number of times by the Security Branch.

Cape Town – Coming one step closer to justice, the legal representative of anti-apartheid martyr Imam Abdullah Haron’s family poked holes in the testimony of retired cop Johannes Burger, who was on duty when Haron’s body was found in a cell at the Maitland police station in Cape Town 53 years ago.

Imam Haron inquest resumes with closing arguments expected

Closing arguments are expected to continue in the High Court in Cape Town on Tuesday in the reopened inquest into the death of Muslim cleric, Imam Abdullah Haron.

Last year, the Inquest Court heard evidence from witnesses including former detainees, family, pathologists, and a trajectory and aeronautical engineer.

Cape Town – More than 50 years after their father’s death at the hands of apartheid security police, the family of Struggle activist Imam Abdullah Haron feel that closure is finally within reach.

Speaking as the re-opened inquest into the Imam’s death resumed in the Western Cape High Court, Imam Haron’s son Muhammed said he and his sisters, Shamela Shamis and Fatiema Masoet-Haron, had already gained partial closure in November last year.

Court urged to reject apartheid finding on Imam Haron’s death

The re-opened inquest into the death in police custody of Imam Abdullah Haron has been asked to overturn a previous finding absolving the state of his death.

An inquest held in 1970 found that  Haron died as a result of an alleged accidental fall down a staircase.

The re-opened inquest hearing resumed on Monday for the closing arguments by the legal teams of the family and the state and drew interest from members of the Turkish Jurists Union who were among the packed gallery.

Members of the apartheid Security Branch who tortured and interrogated Imam Abdullah Haron should be held responsible for his death, the re-opened inquest heard on Tuesday.

Haron died at the hands of the notorious Security Branch on 27 September 1969 after spending 123 days in solitary confinement.

Cape Town – Judgment has been reserved in the reopened inquest into the death of Imam Abdullah Haron, with the slain martyr’s family saying they looked forward to the outcome.

Cape Town – The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has asked the Western Cape High Court to overturn the findings of the 1970 inquest into the death in police custody of anti-apartheid Struggle activist Imam Abdullah Haron and to “make right what was made wrong”.

Making his closing arguments for the State’s case at the reopened inquest, NPA advocate Lifa Matyobeni said the court had heard enough compelling new evidence to make new findings.
