Two former apartheid-era police officers in South Africa have been found guilty of murder in the 1987 killing of activist and student leader Caiphus Nyoka
CAPE TOWN, South Africa — Two former apartheid-era police officers in South Africa were found guilty of murder Tuesday in the 1987 killing of activist and student leader Caiphus Nyoka.
Nyoka’s fatal shooting at his family home near Johannesburg during the period of white minority rule was one of many alleged abuses by apartheid police that went unpunished for decades.
Abraham Engelbrecht and Pieter Stander, who prosecutors said are both in their 60s, were convicted by a judge in the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg. They will be sentenced later. A third former police officer was acquitted.
Family of anti-apartheid activist Nyoka want harsh sentence for accused
The family of student activist Caiphus Nyoka, who was brutally murdered in 1987, says they hope justice will prevail and that the two accused will receive a heavy sentence.
This comes after the Johannesburg High Court found two of the three apartheid-era police officers guilty of the murder.
Nyoka, who was a student activist and leader, was shot nine times while sleeping at his Daveyton home. The trio – Major Leon van den Berg, Sergeant Abraham Engelbrecht, and Peter Stander – have been on trial for the 1987 murder.
Judge Ismail Abrahams acquitted Major Leon van den Berg, finding that the state failed to prove its case against him beyond a reasonable doubt.
Nyoka’s sister, Agrelia Nyoka, says the family has endured pain for 38 years.

While a ruling by the Eastern Cape High Court has exonerated members of the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC)’s military wing from the brutal Highgate massacre, the identities of the individual perpetrators remain unknown. The court handed down judgement on Monday in the inquest, which has been running since January.
The judge ruled that the perpetrators were probably members of apartheid security forces.
