Press Release: 06 May 2021

João ‘Jan’ Anastacio Rodrigues made his 18th court appearance earlier this morning at the Palm Ridge High Court in Germiston for his role in the murder of anti-apartheid activist Ahmed Timol in October 1971.
Both counsel for the State and Defence, informed Monama J that the long awaited decision from the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in Bloemfontein is still pending. Roderigues appeal to the SCA was heard on 6 November 2020.
Judge Monama inquired as to why the State Attorney’s Office continues to pay for the legal costs for Roderiques. The Judge highlighted his concerns that the State Attorney’s office refused to cover the legal costs for former President Jacob Zuma and former Crime Intelligence boss, Richard Mdluli, and yet continues to foot the bill for Roderigues.
“ I have run out of commentary”, added Judge Monama. He also stated that the prolonged delays is also painful for the accused, Roderigues.
Judge Monama who evidently sounded frustrated at the lack of progress, extended the bail of Roderigues who is set to make his 19th court appearance on 12 July 2021 at the South Gauteng High Court.
