In a week where the Neil Aggett inquest is in the headlines and anti-apartheid activists Barbara Hogan and Frank Chikane testify about the cruelty of the murderous state machinery at the time, it is perhaps fitting to remember another activist who turned 80 this month — Black Sash royalty Mary Burton.

Anti-apartheid activist Reverend Frank Chikane has concluded his testimony at the Aggett inquest that’s being heard in the High Court in Johannesburg. He’s told the hearing about the last time he saw Dr Neil Aggett, who was found hanging in his cell at the then John Vorster Square Police Station on 5 February 1982. His family disputes the apartheid security branch’s claim that he committed suicide. Chikane says Dr Aggett struggled to walk the last time he saw him through a hole in his own cell.
