On 27 October 2022 South Africans who fought against apartheid will commemorate the 51st year of the death in detention of Ahmed Timol.

Timol was mercilessly killed on 27 October 1971 by the security police of the apartheid regime stationed at John Vorster Square Police Station in Johannesburg. He was brutally tortured during his interrogation by security police.

The second inquest in 2017 into his death headed by Judge Billy Mothle ruled that Ahmed Timol was murdered by the security police during his interrogation and that he did not jump to his death from the 10th floor of the police station as claimed by his interrogators.

As the surviving siblings of the late Ahmed Timol, we wish to thank all persons, particularly our nephew, Imtiaz Cajee, as well as organisations and institutions that contributed to the positive outcome of the recent inquest. We believe that the good name, dignity, integrity and honour of our beloved brother, Ahmed Timol, has been restored for all times.

We once again thank former President Nelson Mandela, the Gauteng Department of Education and the School Governing Body of the former Azaadville Secondary School for renaming this institution as the Ahmed Timol Secondary School. We also thank the Presidency for posthumously awarding to our brother the Order of Luthuli in Silver in December 2009.

As the siblings of Ahmed Timol we are satisfied with the final outcome of the recent inquest into his death in detention and we therefore deem the matter to be closed.

We will however in our individual capacities continue to assist, where possible, families and friends who had lost their dear ones in detention and in the broader struggle for liberation in South Africa.
