The inquest concluded on 12 October 2017 with Judge Mothle reversing the 1972 verdict from Ahmed Timol committing suicide to have been murdered in police detention. Joao Roderigues was to be investigated for his role in the murder of Timol. He was charged on 30 July 2018 and released on bail of two thousand rands. His first court appearance for his criminal trial was 18 September 2018.

On Monday this week, 21 June 2021, the SCA dismissed his appeal, but granted leave to apppeal to the Constitutional Court.
