The defence team of former security police sergeant Joao Rodrigues has asked for a permanent stay of prosecution. The 80-year-old is accused of being involved in the murder of anti-apartheid activist Ahmed Timol almost 47 years ago at the notorious John Vorster Square police station. Rodrigues appeared briefly at the South Gauteng High Court for a pre-trial conference. He insisted Timol committed suicide during the 1972 inquest. The suicide version was overturned by the North Gauteng High last year.
