MEDIA INVITATION: APARTHEID ATROCITIES AND RECONCILIATION – 50TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATION EVENT OF THE LIFE OF NICODEMUS KGOATHE

July 01, 2019

Press Statement: For Release 1 July 2019

2019 marks 50 years since the passing away of Nicodemus Kgoathe on 4 February 1969. Like many other apartheid activists, Kgoathe died after being interrogated by apartheid police security branch. His cause of death is recorded as broncho-pneumonia.

In recent weeks we saw two historic judgments, in the context of holding those who perpetuated atrocities during apartheid accountable:

  • Joao Rodrigues is to stand trial for the murder of the Ahmed Timol after his application for stay of prosecution was dismissed. Also;
  • The North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria to have the former Umkhonto we Sizwe operative, Nokuthula Simelane declared provisionally dead pending opposition from her alleged killers, welcomed by both the court and her family was victorious.

Both of these judgments are significant victories for the families of the victims of apartheid atrocities, that those responsible for these cruel deaths will at last be held accountable.

Whilst the Kgoathe family also endeavoured to engage law enforcement agencies to bring to book the perpetrators who were involved in the killing of Mr Kgoathe, we will commemorate  50 years since the death of Nicodemus Kgoathe, by remembering his contribution to society, as a principled community leader, father, grandfather and compassionate citizen.

The media as a stakeholder is hereby invited to this event, and the details are as follows:
